The test launch was carried out from an underwater position at a depth of 40 metres (131 feet). from the White Sea to the Barents Sea in the Arctic region

The nuclear-powered submarine theK-560Severodvinsk successfully launched a second hypersonic missile Tsirkon from the White Sea to a target in the Barents Sea. Previously, the missile was tested from a surface naval vessel, the Admiral Gorshkov, the project"s lead ship.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry statement, "the crew of the nuclear-powered submarine The Severodvinsk launched a hypersonic cruise missile Tsirkon for the first time beneath the sea surface from a depth of 40 metres in the White Sea to a target in the Barents Sea. According to objective monitoring systems, the missile"s flight path from surfacing to hitting the target followed the expected parameters "

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that the Tsirkon hypersonic missile, which can reach speeds of Mach 9 and hit targets more than 1,000 kilometres away, would be put into service soon.

The missile was seen shooting upwards from a submarine, its glare lighting up the night sky and illuminating the water"s surface, according to the ministry"s low-quality video footage.

According to open sources, the NPO-Machinostroeniya designed the hypersonic 3M-22 missile in Reutov in the Moscow region. It is a part of the 3K-22 (Tsirkon code) complex, which NATO reports as SS-N-33

On July 19, it was reported that Admiral Gorshkov, the Project 22350 lead frigate, had successfully launched the Tsirkon hypersonic missile at a land target at a speed of Mach 7 and a distance of more than 350 kilometres. The missile was launched from the White Sea by the frigate, according to the military agency. The land target was located on the Barents Sea coast.

The Severodvinsk is a Yasen-class nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine.

The Yasen-class nuclear submarines will be outfitted with land-attack cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, and anti-submarine missiles such as the P-800 Oniks SLCM, the Kalibr family SLCM, or the 3M51 SLCM. The 3M54K (terminal-supersonic) and 3M54K1 (subsonic) anti-ship variants, the 91R1 anti-submarine variant, and the 3M14K land-attack variant are all Kalibr-PL variants.

According to Russian military sources, the submarine will carry 40 Kalibr and 32 Oniks cruise missiles stored in eight (ten for 855M) vertical launchers. At the expense of torpedoes, additional missiles may be carried in the torpedo room. And the class"s lead vessel.
