Next-Gen Fırtına Howitzers to Move with Allison Transmission TurDef

As Turkiye-US ties strengthen, new deals are struck. Allison Transmission has moved on with the Turkish Armed Forces' Next-Generation T-155 Fırtına Howitzer project. The US-based business has inked an agreement with its Turkish-licensed manufacturer, HST Otomotiv, to provide 32 transmissions as part of the project's second phase.

Allison Transmission confirmed a new agreement to provide Allison X1100-5A4 cross-drive Transmission for Next-Generation T-155 Fırtına Howitzers. The arrangement, worth around $100 million, signals the start of the two firms' second phase of cooperation.

The press announcement summarises: This agreement is predicated on the success of Phase 1 and is one of many growth opportunities expected to produce an extra $100 million in annual revenue in Allison's Defence end market.

The Allison X1100 cross-drive transmissions are designed for large tracked assault vehicles weighing 45 to 63 tonnes. It includes four forward ranges, two reverse ranges, and a cross-drive technology that integrates steering and braking into a single small, long-lasting gadget.

Allison's phase-one deal with HST Otomotiv included the delivery of 10 transmissions to Turkiye in 2024 for incorporation into the next-generation Firtina Howitzer. The new phase two agreement will include an additional 32 transmissions, with delivery beginning in the first quarter of 2026. The Turkish Armed Forces want to construct 140 to 160 Firtina Howitzers.
