Yağmur Ahmet Güldere, Turkiye"s Ambassador to Ukraine, was invited to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 29. On behalf of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mykola Tochytskyi, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, delivered a verbal note to the Turkish Ambassador. Tochytskyi drew the Turkish Ambassador"s attention to the fact that "the specified vessel falls under the definition of a warship with the purposes of this Convention, according to the provisions of the Convention regarding the Regime of the Straits from July 20 1936."Tochytskyi requested that the Turkish side provide official information about the cargo being transported by the Sparta II ship through the Bosporus Strait, as well as the measures taken by Turkiye to comply with the provisions of the Convention and prevent further escalation of the Russian-Ukrainian war.The Deputy Minister expressed hope that the Turkish side will follow through on its decision to close the Black Sea straits to Russian warships during the Russian-Ukrainian war on February 28 2022, "in line with Turkiye"s support for Ukraine"s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders."According to Naval News, Russia is believed to have shipped an S-300 air defence system from its Syrian bases to the Black Sea.Ukraine delivers a diplomatic note to Turkiye due to the Russian ship carrying S-300 missiles via BosporusThe ship sailed from Tartus, Syria, and it is considered that S-300 components were assembled on the pier. The S-300 most likely came from Masyaf in northern Syria. Sparta II set sail on August 20 and passed through the Bosporus overnight on August 24-25. It arrived in Novorossiysk on August 27 after waiting at anchor near the Russian coast.Oboronlogistika owns Sparta II, a Russian Ministry of Defence-controlled company that provides transportation and logistics services.The United States added Sparta II, to the cargo ship list that must be followed.Ukrainian claims, however, are not supported by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Article 29 provides the definition of warships. It reads, "warship" means a ship belonging to the armed forces of a State bearing the external marks distinguishing such ships of its nationality, under the command of an officer duly commissioned by the government of the State and whose name appears in the appropriate service list or its equivalent, and manned by a crew which is under regular armed forces discipline." It is known that the ship"s crew is civilian.
