This missile will complement the F-100 and F-110 frigates three years before the country's navy retired the Harpoon Anti-Ship Missile. The Harpoon missile will remain operational in the Spanish Navy until the complete delivery of the NSM missile is completed. The NSM is designed to engage sea and land targets at over 115 miles (185 km), exceeding the range of the Harpoon. The NSM missile flies directly above the water's surface to evade defences and relies on inertia, GPS, terrain reference navigation and infrared homing imaging.
Navantia is expected to deliver frigates in 2017.
