The State Department approved a possible Foreign Military Sale (FMS) to Japan of E-2D Advanced Hawkeye (AHE) Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) Aircraft and related equipment for an estimated cost of $1.381 billion. The Defence Security Co-operation Agency (DSCA) delivered the required certification notifying Congress of this possible sale today.
Japan has requested to buy up to five E-2D Advanced Hawkeye Airborne Early Warning and Control Aircraft; 12 T56-A-427A Engines (ten installed, two spares); six Multifunction Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio System Terminals (five installed, one spare); five APY-9 Radars; five AN/AYK-27 Integrated Navigation Control and Display Systems; 12 LN-251 Embedded Global Positioning Systems/Inertial Navigation Systems with Embedded Airborne Selective Availability Anti-Spoofing Module or M-Code Receiver (ten installed, two spares); and six ALQ-217 Electronic Support Measures Systems (Five installed and one spare). The estimated total programme cost is $1.381 billion.
Japan already has 13 E-2Ds to replace an equal number of older E-2C Hawkeyes, which have been in service since 1983. Japan is the largest E-2 operator outside the United States.
