“The missile is prepared for deployment in defence of our homeland. We are trying for our armaments in the area to be smart firstly, secondly, be capable of automatic control function, and thirdly be surgical in nature,” Brigadier General Kioumars Heydari, commander of the Iranian Army’s Ground Force, was quoted as saying by government-owned PressTV Sunday.
A top military officer says weapon can work in any weather conditions. The Ground Force commander did not reveal the location where the test was held.
Heydari noted that the test-firing was gauging the missile’s precision of strike and destruction power.
Iran’s national army controls short-range missiles, although longer-range ones capable of travelling up to 2,000 kilometres (1,250 miles) — far enough to reach archenemy Israel and US military bases — are controlled by the paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.
Iran has in the recent past unveiled a host of new weapons including Bavar 373 and Khordad-3 missile systems; Zolfaqar-e Basir anti-ship missile with a range of more than 700km; vertically-launched Sepher, Shahab-2 and Hodhod-4 drones; an armed ground-based robot drone named Caracal after a type of wild cat found in parts of Iran; an indigenous kamikaze drone mounted on attack boats; helicopter carrier; speed boats; a new “space” rocket besides inaugurating a mass production line for advanced shoulder-fired missiles such as American Javelins.
