The Crimean Bridge, also called Kerch Bridge, was partly destroyed by the explosions. Russia built the bridge after it annexed Crimea at the start of the Russo-Ukrainian War.
The longest bridge Russia has ever built, and the longest one in Europe has a length of 19 km, was considered an important element for Russian forces in Crimea and southern Russian-occupied Ukraine.
On 8 October 2022 morning at 6:02 am local time, a large explosion occurred on the road linking Crimea to Russia. Images from the bridge showed at least two railway carriages in a fire.
The cause of the explosion is not known. Russian officials blamed it on a car bomb. Russian news agencies wrote, “a car bomb exploded, setting fire to seven oil tankers being carried by rail to Crimea.”
Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the Ukrainian presidency, tweeted, “Crimea, the bridge, the beginning. Everything illegal must be destroyed, everything stolen must be returned to Ukraine, everything belonging to the Russian occupation must be expelled.”
The road might demonstrate that Ukraine has also gained long-distance precision strike capabilities. If it is, it will be the second big success after the Moskva vessel sunk in the Black Sea.
