Delays Impede the Construction of Finnish Warships
According to Puranen, the delay caused by the setback will extend the completion of the entire fleet until at least 2029. As a result, the Navy will have to extend the lifecycle of its Hämeenmaa-class and the Rauma-class ships, which are already at the end of their service life. The Navy had ordered four multi-role corvettes at about 1.3 billion euros from the Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC). The tabloid claimed that the primary cause of the delay was the difficulties experienced by the shipyard in designing the ships. In November of last year, Puranen voiced concern over the delays that had occurred in the process of designing warships. However, it was reported that despite a planning snag, the entire fleet would be completed by 2028.The Pohjanmaa-class corvettes will be multi-role surface combatants with ice-breaking capabilities. It had been planned that the construction of the four corvettes would begin in 2022 and continue until 2025. Sea trials were expected to begin in 2024.
