The country officially applied for NATO membership along with Sweden in May last year, abandoning decades of military non-alinement, a decision spurred by Russia’s war on Ukraine, which started on Feb. 24, 2022. The two country’s membership to NATO is subject to ratification by all 30 member states. Türkiye, a NATO member for more than 70 years, objected, accusing Sweden of tolerating and supporting terrorist groups such as the PKK and the Fetullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO), which was behind the July 15, 2016 coup attempt in Türkiye. Hungary objects to the two countries’ NATO application claiming that they produce false news about the country.
According to a press release published on the Finnish Ministry of Defence website on February 24, the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) have been authorised to order an additional 155 mm BONUS Mk II (BOfors NUtating Shell) anti-armour artillery from French contractor Nexter.
