US Army Picks VULCANO 155 GLR for Its New Artillery Guns TurDef

General Dynamics will produce the VULCNO 155 GLR guided artillery round developed by Leonardo for 155 mm guns, per the US Army’s awarding of a new contract.

GDOTS announced that it has been awarded a contract by the US Army to produce the VULCANO 155 GLR guided artillery round developed by Italy’s Leonardo.

The guided round compatible with various 155 mm artillery guns has a range of 70 to 100 km and is guided by GPS/INS navigation by default. Optionally, the rounds can be fitted with laser or IR seekers for moving target engagement. The terminal guidance capability, as the officials have specifically touched on the subject, might be a point of investment from the Army, considering the interest in new means of coastal defence.

Leonardo has also developed VULCANO in other calibres, including 76 mm and 127 mm, with similar features. Additionally, a 120 mm variant is in development for use on main battle tanks.

General Atomics is developing another new guided round for the US Army, LRMP. Unlike conventional guided rounds, LRMP deploys wings to glide towards the target, similar to small diameter bombs. Beyond artillery guns, LRMP is planned to be used on ER GMLRS artillery rocket and PrSM Increment 3 SRBM as a submunition.
