Turkiye’s first AIP Submarine at Sea Trial
Turkish Navy’s first Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) submarine, Type 214TN Reis Class Submarine Piri Reis, is at sea trials. The photos of the submarine first appeared on social media on December 6th, conducting initial sea trials in the Sea of Marmara. A tug boat was seen escorting the submarine while an S-70B was accompanying.

Turkish Defence Ministry released a statement three days after the sea trials had begun and stated that the tests started on December 6th. The construction of the first submarine, the Piri Reis, was conducted at the Gölcük Naval Shipyard. The submarine was launched in 2019 and floated in the water in March 2021. The second submarine Hizir Reis is scheduled to be commissioned in 2023.

The Reis Class submarine project comprises six submarines, and all Reis-class submarines will be delivered to the Turkish Navy by 2027. The submarines are built under Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS) licence.
