Dearsan Shipyard has agreed to build two offshore patrol vessels for the Nigerian Navy beginning on October 3, 2021. According to previous statements made by company officials, the keel-laying ceremony marked the start of construction of the vessels, which are expected to be delivered in 37 months.
According to the Chief of the Nigerian Navy's statements in October 2021, these OPVs will be capable of carrying out maritime interdiction operations, surveillance, and special forces operations, as well as providing naval fire support to land forces, allowing the Nigerian Navy to maintain its operational engagements on an upward trajectory.
The ship's main naval gun will be Leonardo's 40-millimetre MARLIN gun, armed with Aselsan's 30-millimetre SMASH at the stern. The ship will also have two Aselsan 12.7 mm RWS STAMPs.
HAVELSAN will supply the ADVENT combat management system, and another Turkish company, YALTES, will provide the operator consoles. The new OPVs' sensor suite includes the Italian company GEM Elettronica's 2D surface search radar and the EO fire control system.
