Russia Increases Its Naval Existence in ASIAN Region
The naval exercise of ASEAN countries with the Russian Navy for the first time was held off the coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia, on 1-3 December 2021. The ARNEX-2021 naval exercise took place in the territorial waters of Indonesia near the island of Ve. The exercise involved ships of eight states: Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei and Myanmar, and three countries sent observers of the 11 participating countries.

Russian anti-submarine ship of the Pacific Fleet Admiral Panteleev, has also attended at ARNEX-2021 which represents the Russian Federation at the exercise, on the outer roadstead of the port.

Indonesia deployed one frigate, KRI I Gusti Ngurah Rai -332, one AS-565 helicopter, one CN235 aircraft, and 500 Indonesian Navy personnel.

The exercise was held to increase cooperation and interaction between the Russian Navy and ASEAN countries and training in search and rescue (SAR) at sea.

After China and the US, Russia is the third country to conduct naval exercises with the regional body.

Russia has been one of ASEAN's dialogue partners since 1996, and Russia has become an ASEAN strategic partner in 2018. Russia is also a member of the ADMM-Plus Forum, a Defence Forum between ASEAN and eight dialogue partner countries established in 2010.

These countries consist of Australia, the USA, China, Russia, India, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and New Zealand.
