Barbaros Class Frigate Half-Life Modernization Project will be delayed. Presidency of Defence Industries (Savunma Sanayii Başkanlığı / SSB) pursues the project to meet the Turkish Naval Force’s requirements.
Head of Naval Platforms Directory, Alper Köse, has presented a chart that sums the current projects at an Interview at ITU SAVTEK. According to the chart, the first two modernized Barbaros class frigates will be delivered in 2023. SSB, however, had previously announced that “The modernization of the first ship will be completed, and the ship will commence service in first quarter of 2022.”
Within the project’s scope, current war systems will be replaced by the new and advanced systems developed locally and nationally by ASELSAN – HAVELSAN Partnership. The project includes four frigates that are in the Turkish Naval Force’s inventory.
SSB stated the aim of the project as ”It is planned to use weapons and sensor systems developed before or for the first time in our country, and within this scope, foreign source dependency in terms of combat systems can be reduced to a minimum in the Project scope.”
According to the updated calendar, two ships will be delivered in 2023. The remaining two ships will be delivered in 2024 and 2025.
