The Warship Design Bureau (WDB), an in-house organization of the Indian Navy, designed the Vikrant-class aircraft carrier. The vessel was built by Cochin Shipyard (CSL) in Kochi, India.
On September 2, the Indian Navy will commission its first indigenous aircraft carrier.
The first indigenously designed and built aircraft carrier for the Indian Navy, INS Vikrant, will be commissioned on September 2 with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance. The indigenous aircraft carrier supports the Government of India's (GOI) Make in India and AatmaNirbhar Bharat initiatives.
The Vikrant-class aircraft carrier was designed by the Indian Navy's in-house organization, the Warship Design Bureau (WDB). Cochin Shipyard (CSL) in Kochi, India, built the vessel.
The ship's design started in 1999, and the keel was laid in February 2009. On December 29, 2011, the carrier was floated out of its dry dock. At the time of the first sea trials, the project's total cost was around $2.9 billion. The carrier will have 30 aircraft on board.
