Minister of Defence Hulusi Akar, Chief of General Staff General Yaşar Güler, dived in the Marmara Sea with the TCG PREVEZE (S-353) submarine. The AKYA heavyweight training torpedo, produced with national means, successfully completed its launching campaign at the target ship, together with the national combat management system MÜREN. With the launching, the national torpedo AKYA shot at the real target for the first time.
MÜREN (Milli Üretim Entegre Sualti Savaş Yönetim Sistemi) means Indigenously Produced Integrated Underwater Combat Management System. The project has been carried out by TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) BILGEM in collaboration with the Turkish Navy’s Research and Development Command (ARMERKOM).
Training torpedoes are differentiated from other torpedoes by two features. Since these torpedoes do not carry warheads, they do not explode. Suppose a warhead-carrying torpedo cannot reach its target. In that case, it descends to the bottom of the sea to provide security and prevent it from falling into the hands of the enemy. The training torpedo automatically floats at the end of the training campaign.
