According to Congressman Tim Ryan, the U.S. Army intends to install an
autonomous turret on the legendary tank. Congressman Tim Ryan paid a visit to
Lima's Joint Systems Manufacturing Centre in August. Ryan has long been a
supporter of the Joint Systems Manufacturing Centre in Lima.
Senator Ryan utilised his position on the influential House Appropriations Committee to award $65 million to improve the M1 Abrams main battle tank. Congressman Ryan's financing will prolong the tank's service life and include an autonomous turret.
It will aid in the development of the physical architecture and
mechanical requirements needed to add an Autoloader and Automated Ammunition
Handling System to the Abrams, evaluate current and emerging candidates for an
Integrated Active Protection System, and develop new Abrams mobility and power
architecture for conversion to a Hybrid Electric Drive propulsion and power
generation system, according to Tim Ryan.
The M1 Abrams is a third-generation tank with novel characteristics such as a multi-fuel turbine engine, composite armour, an automated fire control system, and increased crew protection. The tank has been in operation for more than four decades.
