The last flight of the twin-engine jet took
place at RAAF Base Williamtown on November 29, 2021.
About 500 people gathered at RAAF air base
Williamtown to pay their last respects for the Classic Hornet's service in the
RAAF for 37 years since 1984.
According to the RAAF, the RAAF Hornet
fleet has logged more than 400,000 flight hours and carried out more than 1,900
missions.
The RAAF first received the Hornet fleet in
June 1984. The aircraft are flown directly from the US to Avalon, Victoria.
The RAAF's Hornet Fleet has been deployed
to various battlefields, including protecting the main US airbase on the Indian
Ocean island of Diego Garcia after the September 11, 2001 tragedy. The aircraft
is also used to conduct operations in Afghanistan.
Then these planes were also deployed to the
Middle East in 2003 to help the war on terror in Iraq.
