Indian Defence Ministry stated that Bharat Dynamics Limited has signed a contract today worth about Rs.499 Crore to manufacture and supply of Akash Missiles to the Indian Air Force. The ministry did not unveil the delivery schedule.


Akash (Sky) is a medium-range mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL).

The Akash missile system can target aircraft up to 50–80 km distance, at altitudes up to 18,000 m.
It has the capability to neutralise aerial targets like fighter jets, cruise missiles and air-to-surface missiles as well as ballistic missiles. It is in operational service with the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.
