NASA conducted a deflection experiment on an asteroid by
smashing a spacecraft within the scope of the Dart mission. The space agency
announced that the task shortened the orbital period of the asteroid Dimorphos
and Didymos by 32 minutes as a result of the trial conducted on September 26.
Many astronomers expected the time to change around between 10 and 15 minutes.
NASA set a minimum of 72 seconds difference as a target of the task.
The Dart projectile, which weighs 600 kilograms, directly
smashed into an asteroid at 22,530 kilometres per hour.
Space Agency is conducting studies against foreign objects that will pose a future threat. This mission showed that defence against space threats is possible when necessary. Bill Nelson told the head of NASA, “This is a watershed moment for planetary defence and all of humanity, demonstrating commitment from NASA’s exceptional team and partners from around the world.” About the experiment.
